Everything You Need - Hand Luggage Only (Part 1)
Traveling with hand luggage only is a game changer.
As a professional hand luggage-only traveler 9/10 times,
I am here to share all of my tips with you.
So that on your next trip you do not have to worry about:
- waiting at baggage claim.
- lost luggage.
- unnecessary stress.
Just you — and what you actually need.
And trust me…
👉 You need way less than you think.
Why Hand Luggage Only?
Most people overpack.
“Just in case” items.
Extra outfits.
Things they might use.
And then?
They carry it all around for days or weeks…
without ever touching half of it.
And in case you are wondering:
It does not matter if it is winter or summer!
Though I have to admit.
Packing and traveling in the warmer months is way easier.
If you are struggling or can not imagine to only bring hand luggage for your next week long trip
here are some tricks and tips:
The Right Suitcase
Sounds simple.
It’s not.
I’ve tested a lot of suitcases — and in the end, only two things really matter:
👉 The handle
👉 The wheels
Every suitcase rolls well… when it’s empty.
That’s not the test.
If you want to do it properly:
👉 Put weight inside.
👉 Then roll it.
👉 Then check the handle.
Does it feel stable?
Or does it wobble when you move it?
Because that wobble?
You will feel it.
Especially when the suitcase is fully packed.
A good suitcase:
- rolls smoothly
- feels stable
- doesn’t fight against you
A bad one?
👉 You’ll notice after 10 minutes at the airport.
And trust me…
The last thing you want is dragging a heavy suitcase
that feels like a workout.
Or worse:
👉 a free tennis elbow on your trip.
Bottom line:
Test it with weight. Not empty.
That’s where the real difference shows.
Packing Cubes
100% yes!
No debate.
- affordable
- long-lasting (I’ve had mine for ~12 years)
- and they keep everything organized
And with hand luggage?
👉 Organization is everything.
Because you don’t have space to:
- dig around
- repack constantly
- or lose track of things
Everything needs a place.
Alternatives
No packing cubes?
No problem.
Linen bags work just as well.
That’s what I use for:
- shoes
- books
- beach towel
And the best part?
👉 You’ll use them during your trip anyway.
So you’re not just packing smarter —
you’re packing practically.
Bottom line:
Keep things separated.
Keep things simple.
That’s how hand luggage works.
Your Travel Outfit
Think this through.
This is the one outfit
you don’t have to pack.
So pick it wisely.
Wear your bulkiest items:
boots
blazer
heavy jacket
For me?
👉 Even jeans — if I’m bringing them.
Because leggings take up way less space in your bag.
But here’s the balance:
If you have a long travel day…
👉 Comfort matters.
So don’t overdo it.
You don’t want to sit on a plane for hours
feeling restricted or uncomfortable.
A simple rule:
👉 If it wrinkles easily — wear it.
👉 If it’s bulky — wear it.
👉 If it saves space — wear it.
Bottom line:
Your outfit is part of your packing strategy.
Use it.
What are you packing for?
Packing starts with one question:
👉 What are you actually packing for?
Work trip?
Vacation?
Because that changes everything.
Work Travel
If you’re traveling for work, ask yourself:
Do I realistically have time to…
- explore the city?
- go to the gym?
- change outfits during the day?
If the answer is:
👉 No (to all of them) — perfect.
Then keep it simple.
Bring:
- your work outfits
- comfy loungewear / pajamas
That’s it.
If the answer is yes to any of them…
Pause.
Think again.
Will you really:
- wake up early
- work out
- go sightseeing
- and still perform all day?
Because reality often looks like this:
You arrive late.
You’re tired.
The next day is long.
And what you actually need?
👉 Sleep.
I’m not saying don’t work out.
Working out is amazing.
For your body.
For your mind.
But:
👉 Be realistic.
As a flight attendant, I sometimes only have 10–12 hours in a hotel.
So I learned to prioritize.
If time is short:
👉 I sleep.
If there’s extra time:
👉 I go for a big breakfast.
If I wake up early:
👉 Maybe a quick 20–30 min workout.
My go-to item I pack for these short stays?
👉 One resistance band.
That’s all I need for a quick and effective workout.
The point is:
👉 Be honest about your time.
Pack for your real schedule — not your ideal one.
Vacation Packing
This is harder.
Because now…
👉 You actually have options.
And let’s be honest:
We all want outfit choices on vacation.
Here’s what works:
👉 Plan your outfits.
Make sure:
- tops match multiple bottoms
- shoes go with everything
- jackets work with all looks
That way you can:
👉 Mix & match everything.
Without overpacking.
Because we’ve all done this:
Half the suitcase…
never worn.
One tip (especially for summer trips):
👉 Bring something cozy.
- jumper
- long leggings
- warm socks
Even in hot destinations:
Nights get cold.
Your body adapts to the heat.
And at some point…
👉 You’ll just want to be comfortable.
And that’s when you’ll regret only packing:
- crop tops
- dresses
- short shorts
Let’s Talk Snacks
My favorite topic.
No matter your trip:
👉 Always pack snacks.
(And check if they’re allowed in your destination country.)
Because travel is unpredictable.
- flights delayed
- trains cancelled
- buses late
And suddenly you are:
👉 tired + stressed + hungry
Not a great combination.
Snacks will:
- save you money
- save you stress
- save your mood
Because let’s be honest:
👉 Airport snacks are never cheap.
My staples:
- nuts
- crackers
- protein / date bars
- salami sticks
- chocolate
- gummy bears
Extras I always bring:
- tea bags (I don’t drink coffee)
- reusable cutlery or chopsticks
(yes — even just a good spoon helps a lot)
Emergency food
Not glamorous.
But useful.
If there’s a chance you won’t get a proper meal:
👉 Bring instant food.
Like:
- instant noodles
- or your guilty favorite
Yes, not the healthiest.
But sometimes?
👉 It saves your time, money, and nerves.
Hot water is always available.
And that’s all you need.
Packing Everything Up
Now let’s put it all together.
My hand luggage setup:
👉 One side = clothes
- packing cube with daily outfits
- workout set
- bikini (always 😄)
- second cube = work outfits or more outfits
I also squeeze in:
- underwear
- socks
(ideally on the flat side without the handle)
👉 Other side = everything else
This part?
👉 A bit of Tetris.
At the bottom (heaviest items):
- shoes
- cosmetic bag
Then:
- snack cube
- tea bags
- extra pouch with:
- brush
- dry shampoo (baby powder)
- chargers
- adapter
- random essentials
On top:
- small handbag
- linen bag
- book
- scarf / hat
- extra layer if needed
One Item I Always Bring
My Uniqlo down jacket.
I’ve had it for ~12 years.
It:
- folds into a tiny pouch
- fits into any bag
- weighs almost nothing
And I bring it almost every trip.
Because:
👉 You never know when you need an extra layer.
Final thought:
Packing is not about fitting everything in.
It’s about knowing
what actually matters.
